“A love song for people who don't like love songs" - ‘Calling It Love’, the latest single by Elle Coves

The wannabe rockstar Elle Coves has launched into a new era of music, infusing the carefree energy of summer into her very first love song.

Calling It Love, released August 23rd, is Elle’s first fully independent release since launching her career last year. With over 50,000 Spotify streams in just the last few weeks, Elle called it “a love song for people who don't like love songs".

If you haven’t already, you can listen on Spotify here:

Since her first single, Before I Fall Apart released in May of 2023, Elle has released a string of catchy, upbeat tracks chronicling tales of lost cowboys and summer heartbreaks: In Summer, she captured the nostalgic movie-scape scenes of “dancing all night, waking up late” and “driving down Main, screaming to Styles”. In Headcase, she sang of an almost-love who “took over [her] mind”, saying: “I still can’t get you out of my mouth”.

Her five-track debut EP, Selfishly Inclined, culminated the arc of Elle’s heartbroken and reminiscent storytelling, the songs of which she debuted at her first London headline show at The Camden Assembly in early February.

Having toured late last year with the popstar Cate Canning and opened the Dublin shows of Niall Horan’s ‘The Show: Live on Tour’ this August, Elle’s status as a rising star of the pop scene is positively glowing. Now with over 85,000 monthly Spotify listeners, Elle’s loyal fanbase has been playing Calling It Love on repeat since it dropped on streaming services.

On August 11th, Elle officially announced the release of Calling It Love on her Instagram:

Referencing her track Born To Lose, where she sings “and you called it love / How can you sit and let us turn to dust? / Think you can kill it and it grows right back / Oh, no, no, it doesn’t work like that”, Elle reclaims the phrase of Calling It Love in the new, uplifting narrative of a love song.

Calling It Love opens with the lines: “Slow down baby, what have you done? / I’m standing on the edge and I’m ready to jump / Feels like a heart attack, calling 911 / I’m in a bit of trouble and it’s way too fun.” On the precipice of love, she’s adrenaline-filled and ready to do something reckless.

The drums beat on as Elle sings: "No shame, no pain, no crying all the time / I've gotta say, been waiting for a while / Those eyes look like salvation baby, and oh, oh, oh / “Fuck it, I’m calling it love / Fuck it, I’m calling it love / Never really knew what it was.”

In the second verse, the backstory unfolds as Elle confesses: “Back in November, to tell you the truth / Was getting out of something when you called out the blue / You were my ‘get out of jail’, my ‘open your eyes’ / And it hit me like a sunrise / Fuck it, I’m calling it love.”

Layers of harmonies build upon the final chorus before the song slows to an emotional, acoustic ending, with the final line, “Fuck it, I’m calling it”, leaving the double meaning of the phrase right on the edge of our minds.

Calling It Love absolutely radiates the excitement of being young and in love, so we’d definitely agree with Elle that this is a song for everyone to enjoy. Like the universal feelings of fearlessness in Taylor Swift’s sophmore album or the euphoria of Maggie Rogers’ music, Elle Coves managed to capture the literal feeling of a sunrise hitting your eyes in her latest song.

If you’d like to hear Elle Coves perform Calling It Love live, you’re in luck as she’s playing two headline shows this September at:
