‘Oh My’: Alessi Rose has done it again with her latest pop single
In the year since her first single, say ur mine debuted, Alessi Rose has quickly weaved her way into both the minds and playlists of teenage girls across the globe.
Her latest track, oh my was released via AWAL recordings on September 16th, and less than a week later, the rising pop artist surpassed 100k monthly listeners on Spotify, demonstrating the fast paced nature of her success and clear likeability of the new single.
Despite her recent emergence into the music industry, Alessi has already accomplished remarkable things: selling out her first headline tour, performing at Leeds Festival and opening for Noah Kahan during his Belfast show in August.
Alessi seems to be jumping from strength to strength in her career and reaching new heights with every release, and oh my is no exception.
“A new song that you can’t play in front of your parents but that accurately describes the decline in sanity that occurs when you fall in love with someone who isn’t ready.” - Alessi Rose
Having already self titled it ‘the head song’, her fanbase were overjoyed by the official release day announcement on September 9th:
The lyrics of the song explore a relationship that is hugely one sided: Whilst the singer invests her emotions entirely, her partner seems to be more casually involved, which ultimately leads to heartbreak and self-sacrifice. Her clear dedication to please this person is met with emotional ignorance which causes a “decline in sanity” as she cannot let him go, despite his lack of effort to reciprocate the love he has received.
The song begins with an acoustic verse: “He saves me for last, cause he knows that I’ll wait / I’d let him talk forever, while he’s smoking straights / And I’m watching him close, he’s taking my time/ And I swear that I’d do it, if he gave me the crime” which establishes the dichotomy of devotion and indifference that is the central focus of the song.
By the chorus, instruments such as the drums and guitar are added to heighten the songs emotion and emphasize the heart-wrenching lyrics: “I’ve been loving him to pass the time / He gives me head while I’ve been losing mine / I’ll like anything you tell me to, tell me true / Take my clothes off then just stay for life.” These four lines perfectly encapsulate the opposing attitudes towards the relationship, which are causing the singer to lose sanity in her attempts to please him.
The second verse further explores their unreciprocated emotions through the lines, “Your name’s in my mouth, you call when you’re able / I’m finding your hand there under the table / And your breath on my neck, my jeans on your floor / I want it all, I want more, I want more.” The devastating contradiction of actions between the pair draws listeners into the heart of the song’s conflict: how can a person see beyond infatuation when the emotions they feel are just so intense?
In the bridge, Alessi sings: “I just wanna be the thing you chose / Somebody you're afraid to lose / Please, promise that you got me / Tell me that you want me, want me back / I just wanna be the thing you chose / Somebody you're afraid to lose / Please, promise that you got me / Tell me that you want me, want me back.” Finally, the singer speaks out against her mistreatment and expresses her discontentment with the love she is receiving. It’s a turning point in the song’s narrative, as previously the singer discusses falling victim to the sacrificial nature of love and is now brave enough to ask for love in return.
The chorus plays once more before the song draws to a close, serving as a reminder to listeners that he will not change, despite her pleas. The heartbreak that we felt in the very first verse is carried through to the very last, demonstrating the long-lasting effects that this situation had on the artist.
