Song Review: “Autumn’s Smile (feat. Hibernated)” - Dom the Composer

Dom the Composer is an alternative soul artist based in Boston, Massachusetts. Excitedly, his newest single, Autumn’s Smile (feat. Hibernated) was released on May 9th.

This retro RnB track is livened by a co-production feature from Hibernated, an artist and producer also based in Massachusetts. You can find his Instagram here.

Dom announced his new track on May 1st to his Instagram followers:

And from the outpour of love in the comments, you can tell that fans were excited. It’s no doubt because beyond this track, Dom’s discography is pretty impressive. Autumn’s Smile (feat. Hibernated) is already his seventeeth single since he started releasing music in 2019.

In addition, Dom released his debut EP in 2019 called Bedtime Stories, which we recommend you give a listen to:

Though our personal favourite here at VoiceNoted is his single dropped on Valentine’s Day of this year, Glass Box:

Dom the Composer began exploring music in the All Saints Choir of Men & Boys, and you see those choral influences in all of his songs. To date, his most popular releases include: Dancing in the Leaves, Mixed Signals, and Stars in My Room.

Dom’s best so far, is of course Autumn’s Smile (feat Hibernated). You can listen to it below before reading on:

Song Review

Autumn’s Smile (feat. Hibernated) opens with a question: "Can you take more sun than you can have? / Is it all that bad? / Do you take the rays with open arms?” There’s a calming essence to his voice as he sings, “Are you holding on to the petals lost by the soul who flew too close?” In this metaphor, the person he loves has been hurt before by someone personified as the wind, and deserves a love more gentle like that of the sun’s rays.

He asks if they have “ seen the shadings of the moon”, and are “holding on to the darkest side, where the heart can shy and hide?” This theme of vulnerability runs through the song as he offers his own love up as a healing new beginning, like the changing of the seasons.

In the lyrics, he lays his soul bare: “I am open to your every face / And the love that grows to change.” In Autumn’s Smile (feat. Hibernated), he is the sun to his lover’s moon, asking “Are you open to my golden hues and the love that I can give you?”. It’s a really well-executed metaphor, and something that brings to life the image of his music. In all the ways that autumn smiles - through golden rays and petals flowing in the wind - the song does, too.

Autumn’s Smile (feat. Hibernated) is all the best of modern soul music: an addictive rhythm, emotional lyrics, and smooth vocals that make it impossible to sit still whilst you’re listening.

Dom is also the beloved keyboardist for singer-songwriter JØRDYN, and the pair often write songs together. You can read JØRDYN’s Artist Interview with VoiceNoted to find out more about their writing process!
